Fred Phelps said he was going to come to town to preach a message of hate to the youth at Shawnee Mission North. But he lied. He never made it.
Phelps and his Baptist cult literally preaches a hatred for just about everyone and every organization that doesn't agree with his openly stated desire to destroy anyone who isn't straight. You might think I am exaggerating if you have never heard of this fellow and his church-family, the so-called Westboro Baptist Church. They carry signs proclaiming hatred for the Army, hatred for America, hatred for Israel, hatred for the students at Shawnee Mission North. Why does he hate all these folks, because they are not persecuting gays enough!
So I was heartened today to see hundreds of students rallying in support of GLBT liberation on one side of the street near Shawnee Mission North and only a few Phelps followers. Phelps apparently was too busy to make it. He is in fact a bold faced liar.
I hope people will write and blog about the good experience of democratic revolutionary struggle that took place in the SMN parking lot. Phelps inadvertently has rallied progressives at SMN and reminded everyone of the danger that conservatism and social fascim present in the current economic collapse.
We should support the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans youth of SMN and Kansas. They should not be persecuted for being sexually diverse. The hundreds of people I saw at the GLBT rally were healthy, polite and the kind of nice folk just about anyone could get along with.
All this "god" talk is really just dressing up personal prejudice in divine robes. Then this sort of bigotry is a pillar of capitalist patriarchy which is why the conservatives pander to it even if it sometimes sickens even them.
