You look at a term like LGBT, which stands for (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) and you could have a phobic reaction to the alphabet soup nature of the term.
L G B T, it does look queer doesn't it? I can't pronounce it LGBT. Where are the vowels. It ain't no acronym.
With respect to sexual and gender stereotypes, dominant norms and all these variations on human sexuality and gender seems queer as well. So QUEER LIBERATION would be a good, perhaps better title for the blog.
Of course I like the wonderful equality of a term like LGBT. Four different liberation struggles getting a letter and everyone knows what it means, or perhaps not everyone yet. Definitely not everyone yet.
Demonstrations against the bans on gay marriage makes absolute sense and it should be part of national initiative to reverse these bans. Of course this naturally links up to sex education, broader feminism and just plain good manners.
The only way to turn around some of the anti LGBT legislation that is passing in the country is to get the message of what the L and the G and the B and T all about so that those who have misconceptions can have a reality check. Some of the extreme anti-gay behavior and thinking should be labeled as pathological rather than tolerated. Education, patient education of the educatable can turn this around. The ERA could be passed as well as part of this whole effort. The era of statute enabled sexual and gender inequality can be brought much closer to an end in our time. And all of these four liberation struggles are so American!
